Broken Arm Update

Posted in Uncategorized on September 26, 2008 by nukeitfromorbit

I’m having surgery on my arm on Monday. The bone isn’t setting right and if they don’t put a metal plate in to straighten it out I’d could have chronic pain problems in that shoulder. The upside is that I’ll be able to use my right hand again much sooner this way. I won’t be able to lift anything with that arm for months but I’ll be back typing and such almost right away. I’ll be in the hospital recovering for a day or two, so look for a post surgery update mid-week.

Update update: Surgery is scedualed for 11:45am and should take about 2 hours.

The Patriot Act of Economics

OK, I don’t know remotely enough about economics to say if Henry Paulson’s bailout proposal is a good thing or not, but I do know that this line from the proposed law scares the snot out of me:

Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency.

Good things about having a broken arm.

Update: The World Has Still Not Ended

The Large Hadron Collider was powered up today and so far, I’m pleased to report, the world has not ended. You heard it here first. If you want to know pretty much everything you need to know about the LHC check out this video: The Large Hadron Collider Rap from the good people at CERN.

Irony Chef

In his breif tenure as Prime Minister of Thailand Samak Sundaravej has survived charges of vote tampering and corruption, a vote of no confidence in parliament, and mass protests demanding his resignation, among other things. But today the Thai supreme court removed him from office because his guest appearances on television cooking show Tasting and Grumbling while in office had breached a conflict of interest law that forbids moonlighting. Todays secret ingredient is irony.

Chrome

Been using Google Chrome for a few days now. Super fast, a little buggy (which is to be expected from a beta). Most likely I’ll make the switch from Firefox permanently when version 1 comes out. So is it just a nice browser or is it the beginning of the Google Revolution that will doom Microsoft once and for all? If I knew that kind of thing I’d be a lot wealthier than I am. Take a read and make your best guess.

It is very unlikely that the world will end on Wednesday.

So, the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva goes online Wednesday. It won’t destroy the world. And even if does sending death threats to the scientist involved won’t help – so you know, don’t do that. You night think that anyone whose likely to be reading my blog wouldn’t need me to point that out, but trust me, if you write about the LHC some crazy-ass people are going to google your blog.  I’ve heard from them before. So really guys , think about it: if the scientists destroy the world then killing them a couple days early really isn’t a particularly effective punishment, and if they don’t destroy the world then there’s no reason to be upset in the first place. That’s some of that logic.

Randomness

Vote for Troy Hickman’s Twilight Guardian in Top Cow’s Pilot Season 2008 Poll. Yeah, I know you have no idea what Twilight Guardian is but trust me – it rocks my socks.

And speaking of Comics, Fox is sueing Warner Bros. to block the March releas on the Watchmen movie. I am sad. Must. See. Watchmen.

Moving on to less importent matters like the upcoming elections. Early polling indicates that Republican women kinda like Sarah Palin and everyone else pretty much thinks she sucks. Check the polls about a week out from today. If Johnny and Mayor Palin don’t get an Obama sized post convention bounce I think you can pretty much stick a fork in them.
